Aromatherapy? Yes! With first Guest Post!

Good Afternoon my lovelies! I'm writing to you amidst rain, rain and more rain. Far NQ has been inundated with a spectacular amount of rain in recent days, to the point where my main route to school pick up is flooded, oh joy.

But all is still well. There is always a way (she says in her most thumbs up voice, while the anxiety creeps in)

Now, you know that I love a Natural Health Remedy when they work for me, and I really love Aromatherapy.

I have my diffuser on throughout the week with orange to pep me up, a rejuvenating blend for happy feelings, and if I am not feeling all that great I have a wonderful calming blend from the wonderful creator behind Mi-Thyme Australia.

And today I'm lucky enough to feature a contribution from Linda, one of the faces behind this wonderful Natural therapy business. I'll let her take it from here.

Aromatherapy? Yes!

Hi, I’m Linda from Mi-Thyme Australia and I’m a herbal and essential oils handcrafter, creating natural home and body products. In doing so, I transform natural plant chemistry into synergistic blends to support personal wellbeing. For many thousands of years, all cultures across the world relied on the power of aromatic plants to maintain personal health, but now we have the benefit of technology and can use concentrated essential oils as well as herbal infusions.

I started on my immersion into the world of aromatherapy after health challenges which left me looking for ways to avoid toxic substances in my home, and now I’d like to introduce you to some of things I’ve found that help me. Please keep in mind that everyone is different and some of my favourites may not be suitable for you, but I hope to intrigue you enough to explore a little deeper within your personal constraints.

One of the simplest ways to enjoy the benefits of essential oils is by diffusing, either by a room diffuser or a personal diffuser especially suited for use on the go.  My favourite diffuser blend to ensure a good night’s sleep was intended to ease (ie stop) my husband snoring, but I found that it relaxes me sufficiently to sleep (and because of that I’m just assuming it reduced the snoring). It is a lovely blend of Geranium, Lavender, Marjoram, Cedarwood, Eucalyptus and Basil - sooooo relaxing and calming.

Personal inhalers are marvellous when you need the effects, but you don’t want to expose young children to stronger oils such as Eucalyptus or Wintergreen in a synergistic blend to quieten a throbbing headache. You can be a responsible parent and treat the source of pain!

If you have family members suffering from colds and flu, you can run a diffuser intermittently with a couple of blends - Lemongrass, Rosalina and Clove Bud will purify the air, then you can change to Juniper Berry, Frankincense and Grapefruit to ease congestion, or to boost immunity you could try Lavender, Geranium and German Chamomile.

However, it is very important that essential oils not be diffused constantly as we want to ensure that we do not over-sensitise ourselves or particularly young children to these very concentrated collections of natural plant chemicals. Remember to leave the diffuser off for 30 minutes or longer between different diffusion’s. Now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my aromatherapy oils and use as many of them as I can, but not all at the same time, and I also ensure I do not use them continuously. The key is always dosage, dilution, and appropriate selection of oils keeping in mind a person’s age, health, physical condition, personal preferences and - importantly - any prescribed medication.

I believe most people are aware that essential oils should be either avoided or used with caution during pregnancy and lactation, and certain herbs and essential oils should not be used by or around young children, pets, and if you are on prescribed medication you should check whether an oil you want to use is contraindicated because of its natural chemistry. Please, always be safe, and seek medical opinion if you have any concerns.

On another note, I also make my own bath scrub - it’s a simple mix of bicarbonate Soda, Castile soap and water, with the magic addition of lemon tea tree - I find the scent so uplifting, and the scrub works so well that it’s almost a joy to clean the bath. Who’d‘ve thunk it?

Essential oils are natural, yes, BUT they are highly concentrated and should be treated with respect, used with care and consideration of a person’s age, health, physical condition and personal preferences.

I also recommend against ingesting essential oils. It is my personal belief that to do so can cause detrimental effects on the gastrointestinal system and damage the liver.

And remember, too - just because an essential oil may be classified as relaxing, decongestant, uplifting or invigorating, it does not necessarily follow that it will work that way for you!

We are all individuals, with our own unique sensitivities and preferences, and the power of our emotional response to an aroma cannot be discounted. It doesn’t matter that other people find say, Lavender to be calming and relaxing - if you have a negative association with that aroma, it will never work for you.

Thanks so much for the post Linda. I have a lot of her wonderful products around the house. From handcrafted soaps and body products to "Calm the farm" spray for kids (coined after my overuse of the phrase), which we use as "Monster Spray", Linda at Mi-Thyme has you covered!
If you would like any personalised blends or check out their natural products please head over to Mi-Thyme's Facebook page and pop her a message.

Aromatherapy is always such a lovely way to calm yourself down. Especially with a nice cup of Chamomile tea. So if you haven't given it a go, there is no time like the present.

And as always Remember, Love Yourself Moles!
